Fans say farewell to Ricky

The Stockport born, Hyde raised boxer Ricky Hatton was adored across Greater Manchester as a man of the people. The light welterweight enjoyed a successful career spanning the years 1997 and 2012, gaining the nickname 'The Hitman'. By the 2000s he was packing out arenas and winning world titles. He was a lifelong City fan and loved music from Elvis to Oasis. WFM Off The Post host Andrew Donegan paid this tribute:

A man who inspired generations of fighters, carried the city's pride on his shoulders and never forgot his roots. He had that spark that made people instantly warm to him, funny, humble, tough as nails and as down to earth as they come.

He once said all he wants in life are three things - to become a world boxing champion, to support Manchester City and to listen to Oasis - and somehow he managed all three.

Ricky started small boxing in working men's clubs and training in the basement of his family's pub, and the dream never left him.

WFM's Denise Southworth reported from the funeral for Colin Owen's Lunchtime Show on Friday 10th October. Listen to her report here...
